"The unreal is more powerful than the real. Because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. Because its only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. Stone crumbles. Wood rots. People, well, they die. But things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on. If you can change the way people think. The way they see themselves. The way they see the world. You can change the way people live their lives. That's the only lasting thing you can create."
--Chuck Palahniuk "Choke"

"ATARGATIS"
16” x 20”
Oils on Paper Mounted on Wood Panel
June 2012

"Atargatis comes from the Syrian legend that is said to be the first to introduce mermaids into mythology.  Stories say she was born from an egg that was pushed up onto the shore by a fish, and then incubated by a dove. Eventually, variations of the story spread throughout Greece and Rome."

Like seriously, why isn’t pole dancing an olympic sport? This is freakin gymnastics. This is strength and skill. This is not sexual whatsoever. Why does pole dancing have to be so stigmatised as a sexual thing that only strippers do? I have great respect for all people who can pull this off. This is art and beauty right here.

This is absolutely strength and skill and it’s quite amazing. But I’m also super-uncomfortable with the implication that the stigmatization of its origins is *okay*, that it’s *better* now that it’s suddenly “clean”, and that the women who developed it should be erased/removed from its context. They made it. They deserve to keep being acknowledged for it. This is how women’s contributions get erased from history: because they’re the wrong kind of women, because they’re too sexy, because they’re from the wrong classes/ranks. Etc. Etc. So let’s not do that.

The best pranks don’t scare or annoy, they make the victim question their own sanity.
